Debut Release from the label Dog Piss Records gets down to brass-tacks punk while still doing its own thing.
Whenever the South Florida hardcore scene is mentioned, oftentimes one will think of the ever-so-important metallic hardcore genre which holds a very special place in many people's hearts. Still, sometimes the heart gets tired of breakdowns, and it yearns for different things, things like Diss Track #1, the debut release by South Florida punk band The Ashies.
The five-song EP (four songs plus a bonus diss track) clocks in at thirteen minutes but feels like it rips through that runtime in sixty seconds flat. The project’s production is intentionally grimy but tight, with songs moving like a bat out of hell still covered in filth from its last meal. This might not be your typical modern-day hardcore with mosh parts galore but be assured that there are riffs on here that will get you moving or get you moved.
Straight from track one, The Ashies show you what the fuck they are about; fast riffs, fuck off lyrics, and distinctive, iconic parts. Every tempo change on this EP had me going side to side in my bedroom. “The Thing About Evil” is a standout song, with a crazy Elvis-esque riff that leads into a slow part that feels legitimately brain-melting. Don’t Fear the Reefer is a certified room mover with probably the most quotable lyrics and heaviest riffs in the entire project. I am not going to spoil track five but just remember this project is called Diss Track #1 for a reason.
If you are a fan of any sort of raw, punk, especially the kind that is willing to do 21 Savage cover art, then Diss Track #1 is for you. You can check out The Ashies Instagram and Bandcamp at the links below:
